Israels Gender Equality Policy in EducationRevolution or Containment?The University of Haifa The purpose of this article is to examine Israels gender equality policy in education, formulated in 1994. Its sporadic implementation raises the question whether it is a first step towards a comprehensive policy or just a partial response to sectorial demands for womens equality. Personal interviews and an examination of documents and literature revealed that the policy is a response to demands by high-tech industries and women, while simultaneously trying to satisfy opposing ultraorthodox groups who have acquired increased political power. To reach a compromise between the above, it is implemented as a technical curricular matter.
